RFC … IS AS EASY AS ONE TWO THREE
Obtaining an RFC document and the Constancia de Situacion Fiscal continues to be a major issue for Expats. In actuality, the Tramite is FREE. GRATIS. LIBRE DE COSTO. It only requires a little bit of your time to make the appointment, collect the required documents, purchase the required Thumb Drive, and visit the Office. In about 30 minutes, you are done. A Lawyer, Facilitator or Accountant are not necessary to obtain the document. Even if you use a paid Facilitator, you will still need to go in person to the Appointment. Now that the initial crunch is over, appointments are being issued with normal wait times of about 1-2 weeks and in some cases if you time it right even shorter wait times are happening. That is pretty fast for Mexico.
Why should you do it yourself?
First, its free. I have seen Facilitators charging anywhere from $2000 to $5000 Pesos. Second, it’s a good learning experience. You will learn firsthand how the Systems operate here in Mexici and prepare you for other Tramites you may require in the future. Third, you can say YOU DID IT! There is no better form of self-accomplishment. Fourth, you will learn some new Spanish Vocabulary that will come in handy as you assimilate deeper into Society.
What is the RFC?
The RFC identifies you in the Mexican Tax System. By Law, all Nationals and Residents over the age of 18 must now have an RFC Number. It does not matter if you are required to pay taxes in Mexico or not. It is now a requirement. An RFC will help you in buying a car, opening bank accounts, and most likely put $1000´s of dollars back in YOUR pocket in Capital Gains should you sell your property here. For everything you need to know about the Mexican Tax System and how it affects you as an Expat, there is a complete Chapter in my E-Book explaining everything you need to know about How Taxes Work in Mexico. How to make an Appointment
First, Turn off all ad blockers, translators, and VPN. The SAT Website runs on Java Script and these programs interfere with or block how information is displayed.
To make an appointment, (there are no walk-ins at SAT Offices for Tramites), go to SAT.Gob.mx
Click on Tramites del RFC and from the dropdown box click on Obtén su RFC. On the next page, at the far left click on Genera Tu Cita. Select the line for Personas Fisicas. Enter your CURP, Complete Name and Email. Siguiente. Follow the remaining prompts to generate an appointment.
You will receive and email with the time and date of your appointment. You must confirm the appointment and PRINT the Confirmation and bring it with you along with your Residency Card, Passport and Utility Bill.
Be on-time, there is only a 10 Minute Grace Period. If you cancel your appointment or are a No Show, the System will block you from making another appointment for 32 days. Miss that one, and the wait period goes to 72 days. SAT is an important aspect of Living in Mexico and the Rules are strictly enforced.
